THE CHESAPEAKE WATERSHED INITIATIVE

An Opportunity for Maryland Students and Teachers

The Chesapeake Watershed Initiative (CWI) is a project-based educational program engaging students and teachers in 21st century investigations of watershed concepts using real-time geospatial technology. Overseen by the National Geographic Society and supported by a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), CWI provides dynamic, geographic learning experiences for students and teachers throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

The Maryland component of CWI is being overseen by the Maryland Geographic Alliance, a member of National Geographic’s Network of Alliances for Geographic Education, and Sultana Projects, Inc., a Chesapeake-based non-profit that specializes in educational field experiences. Highlights of the Maryland CWI include:

  • Professional Development Seminars: Single-day seminars for teachers during the winter of 2012/13 at sites throughout Maryland. Program stipends and instructional resources are provided.

  • Student Field Programs: Research vessel and paddling field programs for groups of up to 32 students in the Spring 2013 at sites throughout Maryland. Substantial tuition subsidies are available.

  • FieldScope: Instruction and use of National Geographic’s “FieldScope” web-based GIS platform.

  • Environmental Literacy: Programs complement Maryland State Department of Education standards for Environmental Literacy.
